Spotlight on Solomon Chen

Q1.You are the champion both in English and Mandarin speech contests, what is your winning strategy?

A1.:
a. Be open-minded. Expend your knowledge base. Perceive things in a different perspective.
b. Back to the basics. Review you C1-C10 requirements. Then repeat this circle as much as you can. Prepare-rehearse-modify-prepare
c. Believe in this: A good speech is not always a champion speech. Vise versa.

Q2. How did you leverage your winning experience to coach Frankie Wu? What are your approaches? Did you encounter any difficulties in the process of coach and how did you overcome it?

A2 : In my opinion, the main reason of Frankie’s success is he created a great speech. I’m not sure my coaching is one of the key factors to make his success. What I did was that I offered my suggestions which I think might be helpful.

I believe each speaker has his/her personal style and he or she has the choice to accept those suggestions. What we can do is to push them a little bit.

The biggest challenge for me to coach Frankie is that he has fluent English, so I need remind him to slow down his speaking path again and again. In doing so, the audience might understand his key messages he would like to convey.

I remind him that not every audience can catch your rythem. Also I suggest him to rehearse his speech in different pace and tempo. In other words, he has many "speech-versions". Then he can choose the one he like most.

Q3. From a contestant to a coach, which role do you enjoy playing the most, and why?

A4. I enjoy being the contestant most as I am the one who determine the winning result.

Being a contestant can PUSH you to go beyond your limit. This experience is really thrilling and exciting. It's really the best way to improve yourself. Under the "contest-phase", you will be very sensitive to every details of delivering your speech. So you can grow very fast.

Q4. Do you have any advice for those who are invited to be someone’s coach? Are there any tips?

A4. Let the speaker develop his/her best potential. Don’t undermine the main theme of the speech.
