When I was the President of Formosa Toastmasters Club few years ago, I encouraged Michael Liang, a long lost member, to deliver his C10 speech. It has been three years since he made his C9 speech. I thought if he could come back and deliver one more speech, he would get a CTM (now called CC) award. I tried to call him many times, hoping his return to the club. He not only delivered his C10 speech but helped Formosa win the President’s Distinguished Club Award.
The achievement rekindled his interest in Toastmasters. Later on, he served as the EVP and then took on the President role of that club. What a big difference he has made since then!
My fellow Toastmasters, a call might change a person’s life. It is such a simple thing to do and I believe you can do it, too. So, why not just pick up the phone, and call the existing or new or long-lost members?
In the past few weeks, I attended many Christmas parties in the club-, area- to the district-level and was deeply impressed by our members’ zeal, talent, and creativity. Those events attracted a lot of people to join, which is surely a great way to promote our organization internally and externally.
Trust me, my fellow Toastmasters, you have the magic power to help others make a change. It would be the best gift you can give them during this joyful holiday season. Just pick up the phone, make a call to your friends, and invite them to your club. By doing so, you’re making a change not only in you but in others.
I wish you all a joyful, colorful, and successful year in 2009.
